Brejo Clay II
Series: Brejo Clay
Artist: Crystal Mallon Kershaw
This series was inspired by the discovery of schisto clay on a local beach. The artist used fingerfuls of the clay to create tactile and evocative textures on canvas, conjuring the wild seascapes, stormscapes, nightscapes and tranquility of the Atlantic Ocean along Portugal’s SW coastline. Each work is a memento of its birthplace – physical and sensorial – a hybrid of land and visual art.
Material used: schist clay and stones; acrylic and oil paint; ink, gold leaf and paper, muslin cloth; metal gauze on jute.
